Another of my favorite Legionnaires is Thunder. Essentially a female version of Captain Marvel(Shazam), CeCe Beck was created by Jerry Ordway & Mike Manley and appearing in DC Comics. An associate of the Marvel Family of superheroes, Thunder (the alter ego of CeCe Beck, or simply “Beck”), is a far-future recipient of the power of Shazam. Her first appearance was the first The Power of Shazam! Annual #1(1996). Thunder is the super-powered alter-ego of a young girl from the planet Binderaan, circa 9,000 A.D. (when she finds herself in the 30th century, she exclaims that she’s 6,000 years in the past). The power of Shazam is bestowed upon Thunder not by the wizard Shazam himself, but his successor Captain Marvel. By the time of Beck’s life, Captain Marvel has become a bearded old man. As with her predecessor Captain Marvel,...

This week’s installment focuses on the Legionnaire known as Timber Wolf!Timber Wolf is Brin Londo and first appeared in Adventure Comics 327 as Lone Wolf. He was basically Wolverine before Marvel did Wolverine. Here is a link to a fantastic origin page for Timber Wolf: The costume from these pictures was designed by the legendary Dave Cockrum, who would later draw Wolverine. In fact, when Cockrum later took over drawing the X-men and helped create the Imperial Guard, he patterned Guardsman Fang after T. Wolf After his costume is destroyed, Wolverine kills Fang and takes his. Timber Wolf has had multiple costume variationsHe was featured in the Legion animated seriesHe was in long-running relationship with Light Lass. One of the best Timber Wolf tales takes place in Legion of Super-Heroes v.3 issue 13 and spotlights Brin as he  attempts to honor the...

Wildfire – My Favorite Legionnaires Pt. 1

Posted by on May 27, 2015 in Comic Books, Comics, Books and Such | 0 comments

If you’ve listened to our show for any length of time, you know by now that the Legion of Super Heroes is my favorite group in all of comicdom. For the next several weeks, I’m going to spotlight my favorite characters from the team, throughout various times in the team’s story line. We’ll start with Wildfire . Wildfire was created by Cary Bates and Dave Cockrum and first appeared in Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes #195, June 1973. Wildfire was originally Drake Burroughs, an astroengineer. While he was working on a new propulsion system, the unit’s safety valve snapped and discharged a blast of anti-matter energy. Burroughs was engulfed instantly but somehow his consciousness survived and Burroughs found himself transformed into a being of pure anti-energy. Fortunately, his colleagues had on hand a containment suit that could be used...

New Book! – Eli Monpres

Posted by on May 25, 2015 in Books, Comics, Books and Such | 0 comments

Being the only member of WNC that knows how to read, I go through books fairly quickly. Recently, I was at the new library downtown and saw The Legend of Eli Monpress on the shelf and quickly grabbed it. I had seen this title before, but being the tightwad that I am, had held off on purchasing it. Well, I got it home and started reading and realized what I was missing. I immediately went to Amazon and downloaded the whole series. Legend is an omnibus of the first three books in the series and I am a little over half-way through it. It reminds me of The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. I very much like the way “magic” is handled in this series.  If you’ve been listening to our show for a while, you know that...
