In the late 1970’s, there was very little science fiction to be found on TV. Star Wars was still in the theatre, but TV was pretty much a sci-fi wasteland. The one bright star was
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century!
I loved this show as kid. It starred Gil Gerard as Buck and Erin Gray as Col. Wilma Deering. Buck’s sidekick, a small humanoid robot named Twiki, was voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc. The show dealt with Buck being awoken from 500 years of suspended animation and his adapting to life in the future. The first episode test so well, it was released as theatrical film before airing on NBC. The first season takes place on an Earth where most of the planet is a wasteland and everyone lives in domed cities. The second season send Buck and company into space on an exploration ship. The show had some good action, good stories, humor and just a bit of “jiggle”.
The entire show is available on DVD and can be watched on Youtube for free. The effects are a dated, but not distractingly so, and the show as a whole is still an enjoyable watch. Below is the opening sequence for the first season. Check it out!
